The Art of Adavus
What is an Adavu? Is it merely a unit of movement? How do we move beyond executing technique and begin to experience Nritta as a living, breathing practice? This intensive workshop invites dancers into a process of physical and artistic exploration, examining the many layers that contribute to a embodied dance practice.
The session will begin with body conditioning designed specifically for dancers, focusing on strength, endurance, coordination, balance, and neural activation. From there, we will delve into the World of adavus—not merely as technical exercises, but as pathways into understanding rhythm, alignment, breath and intention. Adavus are worthy of reverence in themselves. Together, we will investigate how breath informs movement, how energy travels through the body, and how these foundational units of dance can reveal endless possibilities.
We will be exploring a beautiful Tillana in Ragam Ananda Bhairavi by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal. Using the composition as a point of departure, participants will engage with questions of musicality, phrasing, dynamic variation, and interpretation. Rather than learning choreography alone, how Nritta emerges through an intelligent dialogue between body, rhythm, music, and imagination.
Open to dancers seeking to deepen both their technical foundation and artistic understanding, this workshop offers a space to question, experiment, and rediscover the joy of movement.
Note: Practice Audios will be provided.
