Shakuntala, dochter van de wijze Vishwamitra en de nimf Menaka, groeit op in de serene omgeving van een ashram. Wanneer koning Dushyanta haar ontmoet, ontluikt een diepe liefde. Ze trouwen in het geheim maar door een vloek vergeet de koning hun verbintenis. Wat volgt is een aangrijpend verhaal over liefde, verlies en lotsbestemming.
